Preparing for the 2026 Duch Road Toll: Strategic Opportunity to rethink your logistics

Preparing for the 2026 Duch Road Toll: Strategic Opportunity to rethink your logistics

Published: 04. March 2026
From 1 July 2026, the Government of the Netherlands will introduce a distance-based road toll for heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, increasing transport costs for companies operating through the Netherlands. Viasea Shipping provides cost-effective shortsea shipping solutions to help reduce road exposure, optimise routes, and keep your European supply chain efficient and competitive.
As of July 1, 2026, the Netherlands will implement a new distance-based road toll for heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, replacing the current Eurovignette scheme.
This new toll is expected to affect transport costs and planning in Europe, targeting both Dutch and foreign-registered vehicles using toll roads in the Netherlands.

The new toll will be calculated based on several factors, including:
  • Distance travelled on key highways and selected regional routes in the Netherlands
  • Vehicle weight and emissions class
  • Mandatory use of an On-Board Unit (OBU) for tracking vehicle movements

These regulations will affect logistic companies who frequently transit through the Netherlands by road, as it will result in an increase in their transport costs.

What this means for the European transport sector?
With the financial implications of the new toll system, companies will have to reassess their transport routes. With the increased costs of road transport, companies will have to look for alternative solutions to maintain efficiency and minimize transport costs. This is a critical turning point for companies to explore the benefits of shortsea shipping as an alternative solution to road transport that is cost-effective.
